Faeries at the Summer Solstice!

With the Summer Solistice (or Litha) just around the corner, as a bit of fun, I thought I would share with you some of the tips I have picked up over the years when it comes to working with the Fae Folk!

Here you'll find some of my top do's and don'ts for building and maintaining a wonderful relationship with these beautiful beings.

When is best to connect with Faery Beings?

During ‘tween’ times such as sunset, sunrise, twilight, midnight, midday.

Special dates hold a lot of significance as well, such as Midsummer (Litha), Midwinter (Yule), The Spring Equinox (Oestara), and The Autumn Equinox (Mabon), and the other Pagan Festivals/ Sabbats such as Samhain, Beltane, Imbolc and Lughnasadh!

Where should I meet them?

Again, ‘tween’ places are best such as the sea shore, lake shores, river banks, edges of forests, edges of caves, pools, bridges and mountainsides. Here the lines are blurred as it’s nether one place nor the other! The perfect door into the land of Faerie!

Who will I meet?

This depends on where exactly you are as to whether the sort of Faerie you’ll meet is friend or foe! For example, the forests can be home to all manner of wise and helpful Sprites and Dryads, however places with as rushing water and lots of treacherous depths might be the abode of more sinister beings such as Kelpies!

My advice would be to do your research to see which beings live where, and what to look out for! Some great books to start with are "Enchantment of the Faerie Realm" by Ted Andrews, "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Fairies" by Anna Franklin, and just about anything written by Brian Froud!

How can I build a relationship with them?

Leaving an offering of some sort is a great way to initiate contact. Something foodwise you’ve made by hand is best, either cakes or bread, or even honey or milk. They love anything natural (avoid metal, it's poisonous to them!), as well as pretty, shiny things. Jewellery, feathers, unusual stones and rocks are also a good choice.

Meditation is also one of the best ways to connect with faeries on a deeper level. If you are seeking communication, help or healing, meditation in a natural place will almost certainly be your best bet, though you can invite them into your home during the meditation.

Converse with them out loud in natural places as you would a human friend – You must be polite and respectful but needn’t be stiff and formal! They will answer with mental impressions and pictures, maybe even words.

Build a Faerie Altar in your garden or in a window box. Decorate it with little things that you find like feathers or pretty stones, or you can decorate it with crystals (they love Fluorite) and ribbons or blossoms.

Faeries really love to play tricks so if you want to work with them, you have to be prepared to deal with this side of their nature! Laugh it off, and you'll be fine.

To make sure you don’t get trapped on your journey to Faery, you may want to take note of some things!

It is advisable to turn an item of clothing inside-out on your travels as this is said to prevent you from being ‘taken’ by the faeries.

If you should wander into Faery, never eat or drink anything as this will make you weaken and hunger for only faery food upon your return (if you should return) and you may waste away to nothing…

Never boast of an encounter with the fair folk as this angers them, as does spying on them! They also don’t like to be called faeries! (You can call them Fair Folk, The Gentry, the Good Neighbours, The Hill People, etc).

Never say thank you to them, but offer them something back in return, although take care that this isn’t of higher value than what they’ve given you as they find this insulting!

Keep an open heart and mind

As adults, most of us pooh-pooh the idea of faeries as little Tinkerbell type creatures. Whilst it's true that Flower Faeries do look like this, not all of them do so as long as you keep an open heart and mind, you should find that you have surprisingly rich encounters with these wonderful beings of Nature.

Love and Blessings,

Leonie xx
